Mexedrone is a compound belonging to the substituted cathinone family of stimulants which first appeared online in 2015.
It has the formal and systemactic IUPAC name 3-methoxy-2-(methylamino)-1-(p-tolyl)propan-1-one. It has a relative molar mass of 207.27 grams and an empirical formula C12H17NO2.
Cathinones are similar in structure to amphetamines. They contain a phenethylamine backbone with a benzene ring substituted with an ethyl chain connected to an amino group with a alkyl substituent at the alpha carbon adjacent to the nitrogen. Cathinones additionally have a ketone substituent at the beta carbon which differentiates them from amphetamines.
Mexedrone specifically contains a methyl substituent at the nitrogen analogous to the amphetamines MDMA and methamphetamine, and a methyl substitution at the para position on the aryl ring similar to mephedrone. Then a methoxy (CH3O) group is bound to the methyl at the alpha carbon. It is this methoxy group that gives mexedrone its name.
Therefore, structurally mexedrone is an alpha-methoxy derivative of the widely known substituted cathinone 4MMC also known as mephedrone. It has been characterised as a weak and non-selective reuptake inhibitor at the dopamine transporter (DAT), noradrenaline transporter (NET) and serotonin transporter (SERT) with IC50 values in the low micro molar range. Additionally it displays weak serotonin releasing character at SERT with an EC50 of 2.5 μM. This activity is similar to the activity of mephedrone which also acts as a serotonin releasing agent.
Increased dopamine and serotonin in the synapse are responsible for the stimulatory, euphoric and entactogenic properties of these compounds.
The long term toxicity and health effects of recreational consumption of mexedrone are unknown. It has a very short period of human use.

Physical effects of mexedrone are reported as euphoria, enhancement of touch and a warm soft tingling sensation which rises up to a maximum during the peak of the experience.
