4F-PVP Profile

4F-PVP is a substituted cathinone stimulant compound and analogue of the cathinone α-PVP. The name 4F-PVP is an abbreviation of 4-fluoro-α-Pyrrolidinopentiophenone. It also goes by the names 4-fluoro-α-PVP and 4-fluoro-α-2-(1-pyrrolidinyl)-Valerophenone.

It has the systematic and formal name 1-(4-fluorophenyl)-2-(1-pyrrolidinyl)-1-pentanone, monohydrochloride. 4F-PVP forms a crystalline solid at room temperature, has a molar mass of 285.8 grams and has the empirical formula C15H20FNO.

It is a substituted cathinone containing a pyrrolidinyl ring structure and so related to the cathinones α-PVP and MDPV.

The substituted cathinones are all related to cathinone, the primary psychoactive chemical in the herbal drug Khat. Khat is a fresh leaf preparation which is consumed in the Middle East and Horn of Africa. The leaves are harvested from the plant Catha edulis which grows natively there, but is now farmed intensively as a crop to be sold at high value. The leaves are chewed to have a pleasant stimulatory effect. Khat is often consumed by manual labourers after a hard day at work. It induces a pleasant feeling, increases sociability and social cohesion and increases wakefulness. It has been consumed in the Middle East and surrounding region for over 200 years. Recently, in the last decade, a number of substituted synthetic cathinones have come to prominence in Europe and the USA. They come in a powdered drug form and are more potent than the comparatively benign Khat. They are used often for recreational purposes. Some of the most popular stimulants of this class are Mepherdrone of 4MMC which rose to popularity in the UK in 2009 and MDPV which had a peak of popularity in 2011 as a component of mixtures sold online called bath salts.

The cathinone compounds are alpha ketone amphetamines. They contain a phenetyhlamine backbone with a ketone at the beta carbon and an alkyl substituted at the alpha carbon. Additionally, substitutions are tolerated on the aryl ring and the nitrogen is often n-alkylated or incorporated in to a ring structure. 4F-PVP has a fluoro substituted at the para position on the aryl ring, a propyl substitution at the beta carbon and the nitrogen is in a pyrrolidiny five member ring.

These drugs have a range of effects comparable to traditional recreational party drugs like MDMA, speed and cocaine. Many of them once skirted the legislation and were quasi-legal to sell. In recent years however the drug legislation in many countries has caught up to this. Many new compounds have been produced subsequently with minor structural modifications in order to produce similar highs, but once more bypass legislation. Some of these compounds were successful and others not as much. α -PVP is a stimulant that has been successful in producing a qualitative high similar to MDPV.

The long term effects of short term or long term recreational use of 4F-PVP on human health are not known. There are no studies in to its toxicology in humans.

4F-PVP is not for human or animal consumption.

Unverifiable online reports suggest that 4F-PVP has stimulant effects similar but comparatively weaker than its parent compound α –PVP.
